CAIRDE Teo, one of a small number of successful social enterprises operating within Armagh City, has recently been awarded over £8,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to provide a programme of healthy, outdoor activities for adults. Since 2009, CAIRDE has developed an enviable reputation as one of the leading community development organisations in the City. The group’s latest active lifestyle project follows successful efforts to establish a monthly, bilingual, hillwalking club that facilitates participants from a range of backgrounds in exploring the beautiful Mournes, the Cooley Peninsula and the Sperrins range of mountains while also practising their conversational skills in the Irish language.

‘SAOL’ (meaning ‘LIFE’ in Irish) is a 12 month project that will offer tuition and taster sessions in a range of outdoor pursuits. The programme of activities will include beginners’ instruction in sailing, horse riding, currach building and kayaking. A report published by the Department of Health in March 2015 illustrated that health outcomes are generally worse in the most deprived areas of towns and cities throughout the north. Large differences (known as health inequality gaps) continue to exist for a number of different health measures.  Previous projects delivered by CAIRDE have demonstrated that taking part in recreational activities, particularly outdoors, can improve physical and mental wellness. In a recent questionnaire carried out in the target area, CAIRDE discovered that people who frequently take advantage of physical and recreational activities have fewer doctor visits, lower body mass indexes and lower systolic blood pressures than those who don’t.

The SAOL project begins in September 2015 and will offer participants an entirely new range of skills through engagement with professional coaches, craft workers and tutors. In addition to practical and tangible skills such as boat building, horse riding and sailing, softer skills will be acquired through increased social interaction. CAIRDE is also seeking to enhance the potential of local volunteers and community activists to be agents of  social regeneration in Armagh City. Through a programme of informal training, social activities and recreational pursuits, we will encourage people in the local community to be more creative and opportunistic in addressing their own needs and those of the wider community.
