Siúil agus FIBI ar Shliabh Feá-page-001Ar 25 Iúil 1938, chuaigh Poblachtánaigh sa Spáinn thar an Abhainn Ebro le h-ionsaí deiridh a dhéanamh ar Arm Phoblacht na Spáinne i gCogadh Carad na tíre sin. Chuaigh Briogáid XV thar an anhainn gar d’Asco agus bhí bratach na Catalóine á iompar ag Mícheál Ó Riordáin.

Ar an Satharn 25 Iúil 2015, beidh an grúpa SIÚIL a eagraíonn CAIRDE Teo ag bualadh le Cairde na mBriogáidí Idirnáisiúnta in Éirinn le siúlóid chomórtha ar Shiúlóid na Saoirse a dhéanamh a fhad leis an charn atá suite in aice le carrchlós uachtair Choill Shliabh Feá. Comóradh atá sa charn ar seachtar brigadista ón cheantar, seisear acu a d’éag i streachailt na saoirse sa Spáinn.

Suíomh fóirsteanach é an tsiúlóid thar Loch Chairlinn le cuimhneamh ar Mhícheál Ó Ríordáil ag dul thar an Ebro.

Tiocfaidh an grúpa le chéile in Ó Méith in aice le hÓstán Granvue ar 9.30am ar an 25 Iúil. Cuirfear tús leis an tsiúlóid ar 10.00am ag leanstan chosáin chaillte an tsean-iarnróid idir Ó Méith agus Cairlinn. I ndiaidh 2 mhíle, fágfaidh muid na cosáin inár ndiaidh le dul suas i bPáirc Foraois Shliabh Feá a fhad leis an charn, áit ina mbeidh searmanas gearr i gcuimhne ar na brigadistas. As sin, rachaidh muid ar ais chuig Óstán Granvue ar bhealach eile agus beidh imeacht beag sóisialta ann. Sé mhíle ar fad atá sa tsiúlóid ach is féidir teacht ar an charn go furasta sa charr má tá daoine ag iarraidh freastal ar an chomóradh gan páirt a ghlacadh sa tsiúlóid.

Mairfidh an tsiúlóid ann agus an tsiúlóid ar ais thart ar 90 bomaite agus beidh muid ar ais in Ó Méith thart ar 2.00pm.

On July 25th 1938, Republicans in Spain crossed the River Ebro to launch what was the final offensive of the Army of the Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War. The XV Brigade crossed the River near Asco with Mícheál Ó Riordáin carrying the flag of Catalonia.

On Saturday 25th July 2015, CAIRDE Teo’s walking group ‘SIÚIL’ will be joining forces with FIBI to stage a memorial walk or “Siúlóid na Saoirse” to the carn near the upper Sliabh Feá Forest Car Park. The carn commemorates the seven known Brigadistas from the surrounding area, six of whom gave their lives in the struggle for freedom in Spain.

The location, overlooking Carlingford Loch, is also an appropriate setting to remember Mícheál Ó Riordáin’s crossing of the Ebro.

We will assemble at the shore in Omeath, beside the Granvue Hotel, at about 9:30am on the morning of Saturday 25th. The walk will commence at 10.00am, following the “lost tracks” of the long closed Great Northern railway line between Omeath and Carlingford, now re-established as a “Greenway” walking route. After approximately 2 miles, we will leave the “tracks” to ascend through the Sliabh Feá Forest Park to the carn, where a short tribute to all the Brigadistas will take place. From there we will return on a slightly different route to the Granvue Hotel where it is hoped to organise a short social event. The overall walk is about 6 miles but the carn is easily accessible by car for those who wish to attend the commemoration but not partake in the walk.

The walk will be at least 90 minutes each way, which would leave us back in Omeath for about 2.00pm.
