The Irish language walking group Siúil took part in a very enjoyable long walk recently in the hills of County Tyrone. The group from across County Armagh and Tyrone visited St Patrick’s Well and St Patrick’s Chair, just outside Clogher in County Tyrone on Saturday 31 March. The area is also know as the Druid’s Chair but it is better known as a holy well and it is clear that many people still practice the old tradition of leaving pieces of cloth, ribbons, money, jewellery, medals and statues as an offering to St Patrick. The 4 hour walk through the Tyrone countryside was enjoyed by all and special thanks must be extended to our able guide Éamonn Ó Flannagáin who brought us to St Patrick’s Chair as well as William Carleton’s house. The group go hillwalking once a month on the last Saturday of every month and recently climbed Slieve Gullion in February. Although there was no English spoken on Saturday, the group welcomes Irish language learners and improvers too. The walks provide a fantastic opportunity for Irish speakers to meet other Gaels and to improve their Irish, whilst enjoying spending a day in the great outdoors. The next walk will be on the last Saturday of this month, the 28 April, and the group will be heading to the Mournes. Siúil is a joint project bewtween Cairde Teo, Dungannon and Cookstown councils and Cairde Uí Néill in Coalisland and is supported by Foras na Gaeilge. If you would like further information about the group, you can contact Irish language officer with Cairde Teo Seán Ó Maoilsté on +4428 3751 5229 or email@example.com.
