Chomh maith le roinnt turas lae, beidh iománaíocht, camógaíocht, cluiche corr, tóraíocht taisce, ealaíona agus ceirdeanna, ceardlanna rince agus ceoil, scannáin, drámaí, srl. Ar na haíonna speisialta a bheas linn in 2013, beidh an Siombábach Gaelach Tura Arutura agus Cleamairí Ard Mhacha. Beidh na haíonna ag soláthar na gceardlann trí mheán na Gaeilge.

Le blianta beaga anuas, tá Campa Mhacha á chomhordú agus á sheachadadh ag CAIRDE Teo. Bíonn foireann múinteoirí, oibrithe óige agus oibrithe pobail ag obair ar Champa Mhacha agus tá blianta de thaithí acu ag soláthar tionscadal bríomhar do dhaoine óga. Déantar promhadh ar an fhoireann uilig agus faigheann siad an oiliúint chuí.

Faigheann an Campa páirtmhaoiniú ó Sheirbhís Óige an SELB, ó Fhoras na Gaeilge agus ó Volunteer Now. Beidh táille ainmniúil de £25 don chéad pháiste sa teaghlach agus £20 do pháistí ina dhiaidh sin le costas an champa ardchaighdeáin, gairmiúil seo a chlúdach.

The seventh annual Campa Mhacha – the Irish language summer camp organised by CAIRDE Teo in Armagh City – was launched at the Cathedral Road Recreation Centre this week in association with the Cú Chulainn Hurling Club and Naomh Bríd Camogie Club.

The primary aim of the Camp is to encourage local children to use spoken Irish outside the school environment. Camp activities will take place between 10am and 4pm from Monday 1st July to Friday 5th July. Children must bring a packed lunch each day and have appropriate clothing for that day’s activities.

Demand for places is already exceeding all expectations and organisers are making 80 places available to primary school children from Irish medium schools in the area. Campa Mhacha is divided into two different sub-camps and children will be allocated their places within Camp based upon their age group. Children attending Rang 1 to Rang 3 will attend Campa 1, while pupils from R4 to R7 will attend Campa 2.

While the main centre of activites for the 2013 Camp will be Eamhain Mhacha/The Navan Centre, Campa Mhacha also offers opportunities for the children to visit  places as diverse as W5, C&Js Animal Park and Lough Neagh Discovery Centre.

As well as a variety of day trips, other activities on offer will include hurling, camogie, rounders, treasure hunts, Celtic arts and crafts, dance and music workshops, films, drama, etc. Special guests in 2013 include Zimbabwean hip-hop artist Tura Arutura and Armagh Rhymers. Our guests will deliver workshops and interact with the children through the medium of Irish.

In recent years CAIRDE Teo has taken responsibility for coordination and delivery of Campa Mhacha. Team Campa Mhacha is staffed by teachers, youth workers and community development workers with many years of experience in delivering recreational projects for young people. All camp staff are vetted and appropriately qualified and trained.

The Camp receives partial financial assistance from SELB Youth Service, Foras na Gaeilge and Volunteer Now. However, a nominal surcharge of £25 for a first child and £20 for subsequent children is required to cover the costs of delivering a high quality, professional summer camp.

A Camp welcome pack including Polo Shirt, Wristband and other small gifts, will be distributed to each child by camp staff on the first morning of Camp.

FIBI (Friends of the International Brigades in Ireland) is offering a fantastic opportunity to second level students in Ireland to win an expenses paid trip to Madrid in February 2014.

To be in with a chance to win, all you have to do is to enter a short essay (maximum 1500 words) that relates both to Ireland and to those International Brigade volunteers who joined in the war against fascism in Spain 1936-1939. 

Irish medium students are encouraged to submit their essays in the Irish language.  

The winner will be invited to read their essay in Madrid at the February 2014 commemorations for the battle of Jarama in Madrid, accompanied by a parent or guardian. Their flights and accommodation will be paid for them as FIBI guests, and the guests of the AABI, the Madrid-based friends of the International Brigades.

The aim of the competition is to develop young people’s interest in modern history, and in particular to foster an appreciation of the ideals and sacrifices of the volunteers in these brigades who risked, and often lost, their lives for the cause of democracy and freedom during the war in Spain 1936-39.

The Friends of the International Brigades in Ireland are a group of people from differrent backgrounds who have been working together, organising and supporting events in Spain and throughout Europe for 25 years. FIBI coordinate their activities in Spain with the AABI (Asociación de Amigos de las Brigadas Internacionales) and regularly work with the Irish Embassy in Madrid. 

Rialacha
1) The subject of the essays can be any aspect of the roles and experiences of members of the International Brigades that relates to Ireland, either during or after the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39.
2) Final versions of each essay must be in either English or Irish, and not more than 1,500 words in length.
3) At least 3 sources should be consulted, and the essay should have footnotes indicating when these sources are being quoted, or relied on in the text.
4) Any student up to 19 years of age, in any second level course anywhere in Ireland during the time of the competition, is eligible toenter, provided the essay is emailed to FIBI before the deadline, and is accompanied by contact details of the student whose work it is, and also contact details of their teacher or course supervisor who can confirm the student’s age and second level course participation.

Prominent Irish language activist from West Belfast, Feargal Mac Ionnractaigh, will be in the Marketplace Theatre, Armagh City on the evening of Thursday 9 May in order to launch and sign his ground breaking new book ‘Language, Resistance and Revival’.

The book launch will be sponsored by local cultural enterprise, CAIRDE Teo who are also organising a wine reception, finger buffet and musical entertainment to accompany the launch. Hundreds of people attended the recent Belfast launch of Feargal’s book in Coláiste Feirste on the Falls Road and a sizeable audience is also expected at the Armagh event. Doors open at 7pm on Thursday evening and proceedings commence at 7.30pm. The Armagh launch is part of a nationwide series of events to promote the new book and follows hot on the heels of a whirlwind launch tour of the US in April.

‘Language, Resistance and Revival’ tells the untold story of the truly ground-breaking linguistic and educational developments that took place among Republican prisoners in Long Kesh prison from 1972-2000. The book focuses on the teaching and use of Irish in Long Kesh and analyses the influence this played on the Gaelic cultural revival across the island of Ireland and indeed the renewed interest in the Irish language and culture throughout the world. Based on unprecedented interviews, Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh explores a key period in Irish history through the original and ‘insider’ accounts of key protagonists in the contemporary Irish language revival.

The book will be launched on the evening by guest speaker and former republican prisoner Tommy McKearney. Traditional music and ballad group ‘Cleamairí Oirialla’ will round off the evening with a session in the Footlights Bar.  Signed copies of ‘Language, Resistance and Revival’ will be available to buy on the evening and the book will also be available thereafter from the Cult Úr shop upstairs in Armagh City Shopping Centre.

Armagh will be treated to a music extravaganza on Saturday 20 April when the extremely popular band Bréag visit the Cathedral City for the first time. Bréag, who will be playing in Kelly’s Bar, are renowned throughout Ireland for their lively concerts and have gathered a cult following throughout the island and further afield with their infectious brand of modern Celtic, reggae, ska and world music. All proceeds from the night will go to the ‘Run for Dáithí’ charity appeal. A small admission fee of £5 will contribute to this very worthy cause. 

Formed initially to raise money for local Irish language schools, Bréag have become one of the most refined and original acts of their kind. Over the last decade, having performed as far afield as Sri Lanka, Bréag have developed a Celtic fusion never before heard. The first generation of urban Gaelic speakers in modern Belfast, their Gaelic heritage permeates through their lyrics and music. With Eastern European and Latin American traditional styles, branched with roots of reggae and ska, Bréag give the listener, and inevitably the dancer, a unique musical experience.

Bréag have performed throughout Ireland, Europe and Asia, and have returned to the Basque country and Switzerland on numerous occasions. Having performed at the Sligo Arts Festival, Féile an Phobail and other festivals, Bréag have twice shared a stage with the infamous Jamaican reggae outfit The Wailers, as well as Shane McGowan, Sly & Robbie, Bad Manners, Steel Pulse, The Beat, Mano Negra, Neville Staple, Alabama 3, Lee Thompson, The Rubber Bandits, The Hothouse Flowers, Black 47, and Kila. Bréag have also made numerous television appearances on RTÉ, BBC and TG4, as well as performances on Sri Lankan, Basque and French television.

The gig will complement the musical the Nathan Carter concert in Armagh and patrons attending the concert in the Athletic Grounds are welcome to call in to Kelly’s afterwards to experience a fascinating twist on modern Irish language music.
