Irish Medium Education (IME) in Armagh City continues to go from strength to strength according to a new committee tasked with addressing the growing shortfall of places to meet the ever-increasing demand within the sector.

‘Cairde Ghaelscoil Ard Mhacha’ was established earlier this year in response to pressure from parents who are unable to obtain places within existing Irish language schools. The group has been working in cooperation with officials from ‘Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta’ to develop proposals and an action plan to meet parental demand in Armagh City and the surrounding area.

Naíscoil Na Caille, the City’s third Irish language nursery school, opened its doors to the public in September 2017. The school which is temporarily located at Desart Lodge Nursery will move to a purpose-built facility within the new sports and community complex being developed by Harps GFC at their Abbey Park site upon completion next year. There are now also well-developed plans to establish the city’s first free-standing, independent and non-denominational Gaelscoil in Armagh in September 2019.

There has been steady growth associated with the IME sector in Armagh over the last decade. In September 2009, 261 children were enrolled within  Irish Medium provision in Armagh and it is anticipated that 466 children will enrol in the sector in September 2019. This is an increase of nearly 80% and is evidence of sustained and growing demand for IME provision within the Armagh area.

‘Cairde Ghaelscoil Ard Mhacha’ wish to thank Declan Toal from Armagh Harps GFC  for his presentation on the capital project at Abbey Park, Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta for the mentoring and advice on their Development Proposals and Jackie Kelly of Kelly’s Bar for the excellent hospitality and catering at their recent meeting.
